JHAL MURI / SPICY PUFFED RICE
Cooking Time: 10-15 minutes Serves: 2-3
INGREDIENTS:
- Puffed Rice / Murmura / Muri
- Boiled Potatoes cut into cubes
- Chopped Cucumber (Khira)
- Finely Chopped Onion
- Soaked Gram Seeds / Chola
- Chopped Tomatoes
- Chopped Coriander Leaves
- Bhujiya / Jhuri Bhaja
- Chopped Fresh Coconut
- Chopped Green Chili
- Lemon Juice
- Roasted Peanuts
- Roasted Jeera (Cumin) Powder
- Roasted Dhania (Coriander) Powder
- Chaat Masala
- Black Pepper Powder
- Mustard Oil
METHOD:
- In a large mixing bowl add 2 tablespoons each of boiled potatoes, chopped cucumber , chopped onion, soaked gram seeds, chopped tomatoes, chopped fresh coconut, 1 tablespoon of chopped coriander leaves, chopped green chili (as per your taste), 2 tablespoons of roasted peanuts.
- To this add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.
- Next add 1 teaspoon each of roasted jeera (cumin) powder, roasted dhania (coriander) powder, chaat masala, black pepper powder.
- Mix everything until well combined.
- To this add the half cup of bhujiya (jhuri bhaja), 2 cups of puffed Rice / murmura / muri and 2 teaspoons of mustard oil.
- Finally mix all the ingredients really well and serve immediately.
NOTE:
- Jhal Muri is a very popular street food in Kolkata and also found in different parts of India. It is a very famous vegetarian light snack that is usually eaten at supper.
- Make sure you add lots of potatoes, cucumber, tomatoes and coconut.
- All the above mentioned spices gives it its unique spicy and tangy flavor.
- Mustard oil is a must because it adds a typical bengali flavor to the recipe.
- However, serve immediately as the puffed rice tends to get soggy.
